My most touching memory was in March 2005 when Ricky and Valerie presented a mini retrospective at the Coolidge Corner Theater here in Brookline Massachusetts. Ricky's old friend, and my boss, John Marshall, was in a battle with lung cancer at the time and not doing well, but he pulled on a ski cap over his balding head, and with the help of a cane, made it over to the Coolidge so he could celebrate his friends life and work.

I sat next to John as he chuckled and clapped along with the rest of the audience who clearly were enthralled by Ricky's narration on stage, of his long and illustrious career. At the end of the performance, Ricky came over to see John and they hugged and laughed and acknowledged each other. I teared up. Ricky was still in fine form then. John died the following month.

Now Ricky is gone. But their influence on generations of filmmakers continues through the work they left behind.
